The best hair-cutting experiences I've had in my life! I walked into Mark's gorgeous space with 3 months outgrown hair and just let him cut my hair. First off, the space feels private and is spacious and is filled with Art. You'll get right away why people call it a sanctuary. I was amazed what a true wizard Mark is with those scissors, and how he gets a vision of what exactly your hair needs to look good every day.
I've been there for a second hair cut and had the same outstanding experience. Thank you Mark, I'll be back whenever I am in San Francisco.

It's really that simple. But I'll elaborate. I've been going to Mark for years. But prior to him I had bad haircut after bad haircut. I have wavy hair. which is the worst. not straight and not curly. This netherworld of annoyance. I never thought i could have a cut where I didn't have to do anything to it. Until I met Mark. It's easy to make a client look good when they leave the salon. It's hard to make a client look good each and every day between cuts. And that's what Mark does. He, unlike many stylists out there, actually knows how to cut hair. And well! Mark knows my hair, how it will behave and what to do with it. I literally do not style my hair and it's perfect. I take a shower and just leave it wet. I sleep on it wet. Or I won't wash it for days. Of course it's a little different every time. That's just the nature of hair. But I'm in love with it each time. :) I have super long wavy hair and a ton of layers. No one does layers like him. I've had strangers comment on the layers in my hair. My friends say I have mermaid hair. The other fantastic thing about Mark is that he's realistic. He'll tell you if the cut you want is not going to work on you. I mean, he can cut anything. but he'll tell you if you do or don't have the type of hair that's going to maintain it. My advice... just let him work his magic.
here's a sweet closing story to my review...
Directly after my most recent appointment, I had a date. Mark, the gentleman that he is, walks me to my date's car as he drove up, introduced himself, etc. All night my date kept staring at me saying "fuck yeah, Mark," "wow, Mark," "Mark's the man". Yay, Mark. :)

Mark has been cutting my hair for over a decade now ever since my (new at the time) wife told me I had to get a real haircut. And she was totally right. Every haircut Mark has given me has been excellent. After the last one I got two prolonged compliments from two friends with 24 hours -- which is always nice.
I know a lot of guys think a $20 haircut at Supercuts is fine. And some people can't afford I high quality cut. So maybe Mark isn't for you. But if you want a consistently great haircut by someone who understand how to personalize a cut for you, then Mark has my strongest recommendation.

Couple Loves Sanctuary Hair Salon Haircuts
This is The Byerly's first time getting their haircut's at Sanctuary Hair Salon. Both Dan and Leslie ended up with rock and roll haircuts and loved it! This is the first couple hair spin photographed at Sanctuary Hair Salon. You can see by their smiles how much fun they had shooting their hair spin photos. Their smiling faces are representative of being happy customers as well.
As they leave the salon I am outside saying goodbye. They walk away to go home and I holler, "hey Dan", and snap this great candid shot of them!

Boho or Crown Braided Red Carpet Style
Hi everyone,
I have a relatively easy braided style that I did in the salon today, that I am going to show you. Here is a step by step photo essay of how I was able to achieve the look. I will outline the step by step in written word as well, except 4-8 where I am braiding because I need two hands to braid. I added in some hair wefts for a little more thickness to the braid because of the fine haired client. Here we go.
1. Comb through the hair and if needed add a volumizing spray or something to add a bit of grip to the hair. I then blow dry that in the hair before continuing.
3. I am adding in some extra hair so I hand blend some right there to match it up to the natural hair of the client before proceeding.
4. Section the hair into 2 parts. I used the natural part in front and made my way down the back of the head, somewhat in the center. It doesn't matter how perfect it is, just roughly down the middle.
5. Separate the 2 sides from each other and secure the side that you will be doing second with a rubber band or grips.
6. Starting in the front of the head, section a small part of hair following the part and separate into 3 parts. For a french braid you will cross over the top of each section and for a Dutch you will cross under each section as you cris cross.
7. When you have reached the back of the section and are no longer able to keep the braiding at the scalp, carry on with a normal 3 strand braid until you reach the end and secure it with a rubber band.
8. The side that you pinned off earlier, you are now going to do the same thing that you did with the first side. Secure the ends with a rubber band .
9. Simply tie these into a knot, once, twice or three times depending on hair length.
10. Tuck in your loose ends and secure them with bobby pins.
11. Loosen up the braided area next to the scalp to make a bohemian look and casual feel to the style depending on your liking.
12. Add some spray if you need to. Pull out some by the face if you need to add softness or just want to. I don't always do that. I do let pieces just loosen naturally if the look good. If not , simply tuck them and secure them with a bobby pin or two.
13. I always say to shake your head from side to side to see if there is a loose or not so secure spot. If you feel like there is , add in your final pinning and you are done.

and off the go to the symphony.
Here is a couple of celebrity styles that are similar in style to the one that I just did on Bronwyn. Now that you have learned how to do this braid, try it out. It won't hurt and you can always just take it down and try again if you mess up. Remember, it is supposed to be casual and so have some fun with it.
